A new book
I received a new book in the mail today (ironically at the same time as I start thinking about what to do with my hundreds of books prior to moving in the near future): Au Revoir to all That: Food, Wine and the End of France. It begins positively, and the writing is very good. I suspect I might conclude that the book is overly alarmist about the collapse of the French gourmet culture, but I am open to being convinced.

What did you think of the excerpts in Slate? I thought there was some merit in his point about how Michelin's "they deny it but everyone knows they do it" inclusion of ambiance in their ratings of restaurants has been detrimental to chefs who aren't super-capitalized.
