How to make that awful wedding cake at home

A great thread on Egullet about making wedding cake at home.

I'm on record as not liking traditional wedding cake (although I had one recently that was almost acceptable). But the crazy dedication in threads like this is so interesting that I'm sucked in regardless. I now need to at least try the wedding cake base that's recommended (which, of course, is half cake mix).

Have you decided on what you're doing for wedding dessert? Your suggestions for us worked out well, although I think some guests were bewildered by the bride's rushing around at the reception demanding that they try the groom's cake.

It depends on what caterer we end up with (still in progress). One can do a creditable opera cake himself, so that what we'll do. The other can't, and I am puzzled.

I thought the opera cake from Soutine's was good. Plus, the massive sample they'll give!
