I don't know whether it is right to negotiate with the North Koreans or not, but didn't we just teach the world that if you want a visit from a very high level American emissary, you just need to kidnap a couple of Americans? I'm very puzzled.
- In 1996, Bill Richardson, then a United States congressman from New Mexico, negotiated the release of the American citizen Evan C. Hunziker, who swam across the Yalu River, while drunk, on what he called a mission to spread the Gospel in the North. Mr. Hunziker was detained for three months on espionage charges.
- In 1999, Sen. Robert Torricelli, D-N.J., traveled to North Korea and raised the issue of a Korean-American woman who had supposedly been taken into custody for insulting North Korean officials. North Korea deported Karen Han back to the U.S. a week later.
If we assume that the prestige factor required to get an American released has been upped each time, from Congressman to Senator to former president and husband of the Sec.State, I think Biden's going to have to go next time.
Or maybe Americans who don't want to be subject to arbitrary arrest should just stay away from North Korea.

This isn't the first time:
