Death & Company

We sampled a number of drinks I haven't had before at our favorite bar in New York last night - Death & Company.  Particularly amazing was the Fancy Free  (mostly bourbon and maraschino liqueur) and the Martinez (potentially a precursor to the Martini - gin, sweet vermouth, more maraschino liqueur, and angostura bitters).  We also liked their Hyde Park Swizzle.

That place sounds cool but also like it's a huge hassle to get seated. Have the crowds died down with the recession?

It is a bit of a hassle, but if you're willing to wait 30 minutes (maybe Saturday night is different, but I haven't been there then), you'll always get something (it might be at the bar rather than a table). I do appreciate that it's not as opaque as Milk & Honey or PDT - where getting in is some sort of who knows who game.

Death & Company's quite courteous about the wait; they take your cell number and call when it's your turn, which means you can go get dinner and wander around instead of standing behind a rope. I've only had one time when the person at the door took our number and then never called.
